In recent times, problems such as rampant tree felling, climate change, and air pollution have severely affected the environment. As a result, human life is also facing serious challenges. In such a situation, some individuals have set aside personal interests and dedicated themselves to environmental protection. One such environmentalist is 63-year-old Subas Chandra Maharana of Brahmapur.
Subas had a deep love for nature since childhood. During his school days, while learning about environmental issues, a question arose in his mind: “If we do not plant trees and protect nature, what will our future look like?” This thought changed the direction of his life. Since then, he has devoted himself completely to the service of nature.
For nearly 30 years, he has been continuously working to make Brahmapur greener. He has planted trees in temples, schools, roadsides, parks, cremation grounds, and vacant spaces, helping to make the city greener and more beautiful through his personal efforts.
Subas says he has planted more than 40,000 trees so far. To reduce the suffering caused by intense summer heat, he continues to work tirelessly towards creating a greener environment. Every year, he spends nearly two months planting saplings and the remaining ten months taking care of them.
Apart from tree plantation, he is also actively involved in the protection of forests and wildlife. He organizes environmental awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and other places to inspire people to protect the environment.
For his dedication and love for nature, he has received several awards and honours. Subas says, “I will continue working for environmental protection till the end of my life. I want to plant more trees and transform Brahmapur into a greener and more beautiful city.”
